A number of events occurred in school during our Jubilee curriculum week.

On Monday 23rd May the Jubilee celebrations were launched, with a Jubilee street party. The children were treated to an afternoon tea and music, from across the decades, was played. The school community worked in house teams playing a number of games on the playground which included some traditional games such as Jacks, Tiddlywinks and Dominoes.

As well as the school community coming together for these celebrations a few visitors attended. Mr S Young represented the Jubilee Club from the village. He read a poem to the children based upon the historical changes in the village. Violet, one of the pen pals for Year 6, also attended. Holly from Age Concern joined us as well as Graham Calvin who represented the school governors.

As a school we have also been good citizens for the local area. Book marks were made by the children for Egremont Town Council, who distributed them at a local Jubilee event.

As well as learning about our current Queen, the children in each class also focused on different Kings and Queens from across English history. EYFS focused on our reigning Monarch Queen Elizabeth 2nd, Year 1 / 2 learnt about Queen Victoria. Year 3 /4 studied Henry 8th and Year 5 / 6 researched the War of the Roses and Richard 3rd.

The impact of the Jubilee curriculum week was that the school and the wider community were brought together in the celebration of a national historical event. The school was living in a National historical moment which the children will remember in the years to come. Children are able to place a number of English Monarchs in a historical time line. A focus of Democracy, Leadership, Individual Liberty and Respect were tied in with our school values. Under the UN Rights of a child it was also identified that the Queen’s Jubilee provided us with an opportunity to have the right to rest, relax, play and take part in cultural and creative activities. A number of creative Jubilee craft activities enabled the children to be creative and the street party shared historical links with street parties from across Queen Elizabeth 2nd Monarchy.

“It was a one in a million chance to celebrate a platinum jubilee.”

“It was really fun to learn about the old monarchy and to learn about the Queen being on the throne for 70 years.”

“It was really good to hear our visitor Mr Young read us a poem about when he was a pupil at Moor Row School.”

“We had really good fun playing tiddlywinks on the playground.”
